Venerable Master Hsing Yun, a native of Jiangdu, Jiangsu Province, was born in 1927. At the age of twelve, he was tonsured under Master Zhi Kai at Qixia Mountain in Nanjing. He studied at the Qixia Vinaya School and Jiaoshan Buddhist Institute, and was later recognized as the 48th-generation Dharma heir of the Linji School. He once served as the principal of Baita National School, editor-in-chief of The Raging Waves Monthly, and abbot of Huazang Temple in Nanjing.
